A star rating asks one question: is this place good? Tryst asks a better one: is this place right for the night you’re planning? Those aren’t the same question, and the difference is the whole product.
The problem with a five-star rating
A 4.7-star restaurant tells you people liked their food. It doesn’t tell you whether you can hear each other, whether it fits a Tuesday budget, or whether it’s a ten-minute drive or forty. A great place can be the wrong place for tonight, and a modest one can be perfect. Ratings flatten all of that into a single number.
A five-star place can still be a two-star date.
So Tryst doesn’t assign places a universal score. It reads each place along a few honest axes, then matches it to what you asked for.
The axes Tryst reads
Vibe
Romantic, Fun, Chill, or Adventurous. A place leans toward one or two of these. This is the first thing Tryst matches, because the mood of the night matters more than the category of the business.
Money
Free, on a budget, expensive, or a splurge. Every place carries a tier, so the plan respects the week you’re actually having.
Where
In the app, Tryst finds what’s genuinely near you. On the web, where we can’t know your location, we show the neighborhood. Same axis, honest form.
Conversation
Easy, medium, or hard. It’s the thing a rating never tells you, and often the thing that decides whether a date works. A loud, excellent bar can be the wrong first move.
Moves
A place can be good for more than one thing. A BBQ joint is somewhere to eat and a spot to grab a drink. We tag places by their Moves so you find the right date, not just the right kind of business.

Why this is trustworthy
Two commitments hold the whole thing up. Classifications are judgment, not crowd noise — in the cities we curate by hand, every place was visited or personally vetted, never crowdsourced and never paid. And a place can never buy its way in. That’s what makes the match worth trusting: the rating layer is the moat, and it isn’t for sale.
